WordPress security does not depend on installing one plugin. It comes from keeping software current, limiting access, retaining recoverable backups and checking that the hosting environment is configured well.

Keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated

Use official versions and review WordPress, plugin and theme updates regularly. Remove extensions and themes that are no longer used; even inactive components increase the surface you need to manage.

Before important changes, create a backup and test in a separate environment where possible. Updating should be controlled, with a clear test and recovery process.

Reduce and organise access

Each person should have only the access level they need. Review WordPress, hosting and connected-provider accounts regularly; remove users who no longer participate and avoid sharing one password across several people.

Use long, unique passwords and a password manager. Add two-factor authentication where services support it. Security also depends on the devices used to access those accounts.

Keep backups you can actually restore

A useful backup includes files and database, runs at a frequency appropriate to website changes and can be restored. Do not only confirm that it exists: test the process and know who can run it during an emergency.

Maintaining an additional copy outside the same server reduces the impact of infrastructure issues or a compromised account.

Check hosting and integrations

Verify HTTPS, supported server versions and that your provider can help review logs, backups and resources during an incident. Review file permissions and connections to external services too.

Avoid plugins from unknown sources and uncontrolled shared licences. Download software from official sources or trusted providers.

Turn security into maintenance

Schedule reviews of availability, forms, administrator users, critical changes and backups. WordPress’s official hardening guide is a useful technical reference.
